Monica Frawley
Costume & Set Designer
Monica initially concentrated on her own artwork for a number of years, making a series of performance/installation pieces. Until her death in 2020, she worked in Ireland, throughout the UK, the US Australia, and Europe, designing set and costume and sometimes directing.
She designed for film, opera and dance. She was Design Co-ordinator for the Special Olympics in Dublin in 2003. She worked with eminent directors including Joe Dowling, Patrick Mason, Trevor Nunn, Neil Jordan, Garry Hynes, Conall Morrison and Selina Cartmell, and designed the premier productions of works by many of Ireland’s leading writers including Tom Murphy, Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness, Marina Carr and Seamus Heaney.
An award winning scenographer Monica Frawley trained at Dún Laoghaire School of Art and Design, the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and Central, St Martin’s School of Art and Design, London. Later work included: The Wolf and Peter (CoisCéim Dance Theatre); By the Bog of Cats (Abbey Theatre 2015 & premiere production 1998); A Tender Thing (Siren Productions); I Puritani (Staatstheater Nurenberg); Orfeo and Euridice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Opera Ireland); The Playboy of the Western World & Punk Rock by Simon Stephens (Lyric Theatre, Belfast, Dir: Selina Cartmell) and Macbeth, The Burial at Thebes (Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis).
