THE STORY OF JOE

A HEALTH PROMOTION PROJECT COMMISSIONED BY CIE/DUBLIN BUS

OCTOBER – DECEMBER

In August 2006 CoisCéim BROADREACH was approached by CIE Health Promotion Officer Anne Farrell to lead a dance and performance project with Dublin Bus drivers as part of GUTBUSTERS! a health promotion programme designed to enable Dublin Bus employees from 8 depots in Dublin to improve their general health and increase their level of fitness. Employees were encouraged to sign up to a two month programme of health activities that included a variety of health seminars, dietary advice, and a competitive weight loss league with walking, gym – and dance challenges.

GUTBUSTERS! and CoisCéim BROADREACH

Over two months approximately 50 Dublin bus drivers and administration staff took part in regular weekly dance classes. Led  by the two dance artists, they practiced simple aerobic and strengthening exercises and dance routines. Through hard work and with great hilarity they also tackled choreography to create a new dance theatre piece THE STORY OF JOE.

“I did not realise there was so much fun and team-building issues involved. I have never been involved in a project that had so much spirit. I’m 49 now but feel like a 21 year old after the experience” GutBuster participant

As part of the end celebration of GUTBUSTERS! THE STORY OF JOE was performed at the Alexander Hotel and the Garda Club in Dublin, November 2006.To rapturous applause and much laughter, it brought to an end a successful health programme initiative for CIE/Dublin Bus.

From feedback gathered after the project, it was evident that people felt a real sense of achievement and had gained in physical awareness and self confidence.Over the two month period many participants had made enormous progress in fitness levels, weight loss and improved sense of well-being.
