TALK ABOUT YOUTH
for AGES 13 – 18
St Andrews resource Centre, Dublin
JANUARY – JUNE
SUPPORTED BY DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL ARTS OFFICE AS PART OF YOUNG DUBLIN CENTENARY PROGRAMME 1916 – 2016
In 2016, the dance film project WHERE ARE WE NOW? took place with a group of young people aged 15 – 23 at CoisCéim Studio, Dublin 1. And a group aged 13 – 18 from Talk About Youth at St Andrews Resource Centre, Pearse Street, Dublin 2.
The Project began in January and invited people to explore how they felt about being young in Dublin in 2016. It involved everyone collecting contrasting visual imagery from 1916 and 2016, developing ideas and creating their own choreographic material. An extract of the choreography was presented informally at the Young Dublin Exchange event in March during LiFT Youth Arts Festival, at axis Arts Centre, Ballymun.
In June, facilitated by the dance/film mentors, the young people came together to develop technical film making and choreographic skills and to work in smaller production teams of their own choosing to devise and create their stories for the camera. This creative and collaborative process included developing different narrative structures, sourcing locations, designing costume, camera work, sound recording and performance, and taking on a different roles during film production such as Costume Designer, Cameraman, Director, Production Assistant and Performer. The young people’s enthusiasm, commitment and ownership of the entire project was fantastic, as was their stamina when dancing on a cold evening at the end of Poolbeg Lighhouse Walk that stretches 4km into Dublin Bay!
Four highly individual dance films were produced by the young people, which looked at the landscapes in which we live, the places we visit, the people we meet and the stories we imagine. The films were publicly screened as part of REEL YOUTH FILM programme 2016 at Liberty Hall and Rush Film Festival at the Irish Film Institute in November 2016.
