The Choreography Project 12
Led by Maria Nilsson Waller
INTO THE DEEP
27 JANUARY – 5 MARCH
‘We know more about the surface of the moon and Mars than we know about the bottom of the deep ocean.’
MARIA NILSSON WALLER.
The twelfth Choreography Project INTO THE DEEP was led by Swedish contemporary choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller, and was inspired by her work FOUNDER, concerning the wonders of the world’s deep oceans. FOUNDER was created in 2014 as part of a triptych – LAST LAND (2012) and STREAM (2013).
Through movement, dance, sound and props, this Choreography Project brought the nature of the unknown seas to the surface. Guided by Maria, the participants navigated an imaginative journey of discovery about the landscape and ecology of the sea. Together they experimented with varied improvisatory movement practises, swathes of fabric, and the use of ambient sound to create individual sea-themed choreography.
To mark the end of this Choreography Project the group presented their evocative work in a stunning site-specific performance INTO THE DEEP at the Dublin Central Mission.
