LIBERTY WEST

A HEALTH PROMOTION PROJECT COMMISSIONED BY CIE/DUBLIN BUS

OCTOBER – DECEMBER

In 2007 CoisCéim BROADREACH was again approached by CIE to lead the dance element of GUTBUSTERS! a health promotion programme designed to enable Dublin Bus employees from 8 depots in Dublin to improve their general health and increase their level of fitness.

Using the same structural model as in 2006, employees were encouraged to sign up to a two month programme of health activities that included a variety of health seminars, dietary advice, and a competitive weight loss league with walking, gym – and dance challenges.

GUTBUSTERS! and CoisCéim BROADREACH

Similarly to 2006, Dublin bus drivers and staff self-selected to take part in weekly dance classes and to participate in a final celebratory performance. Focussing on building general fitness and greater body-awareness through participation in fun dance exercise, the participants worked once again with the two lead dance artists to create choreography – this time a western inspired dance piece entitled LIBERTY WEST.

Working closely throughout the project with lead GUTBUSTERS! Organiser, Health Promotion Officer Anne Farrell, much attention was given to promoting the core values of the project – to encourage people to exercise, to adopt an active life-style, and to build personal motivation and self-confidence.

The health programme GUTBUSTERS! culminated in a celebratory end event at the Tivoli Theatre In November 2007. This included a wildly entertaining performance of LIBERTY WEST by a cast of 35 gutsy bus drivers and administrative staff. Once again, it was received with great enthusiasm by a supportive audience, to much applause, laughter and congratulations.
